چکیده

The kinetics of solid-solid phase transitions are explored using pressure-induced structural transformations in Si nanocrystals. In agreement with the predictions of homogeneous deformation theories, large elevations in phase transition pressure are observed in nanocrystals as compared to bulk Si, and high pressure x-ray diffraction peak widths indicate an overall change in nanocrystal shape upon transformation. In addition, unlike the BC8 phase recovered in bulk Si, amorphous Si nanoclusters are obtained upon release of pressure, providing an example of kinetic size control over solid phases. Metastability in pressure-induced structural transformations of CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals.

The kinetics and thermodynamics of structural transformations under pressure depend strongly on particle size due to the influence of surface free energy. By suitable design of surface structure, composition, and passivation it is possible, in principle, to prepare nanocrystals in structures inaccessible to bulk materials. However, few realizations of such extreme size-dependent behavior exist....

Multiple grains in nanocrystals: effect of initial shape and size on transformed structures under pressure.

Pressure-induced structural transformations in spherical and faceted gallium arsenide nanocrystals of various shapes and sizes are investigated with a parallel molecular-dynamics approach. The results show that the pressure for zinc blende to rocksalt structural transformation depends on the nanocrystal size, and all nanocrystals undergo nonuniform deformation during the transformation. Spheric...

Transition state analysis of solid-solid transformations in nanocrystals.

A systematic simulation methodology is introduced for the accurate determination of experimentally measurable quantities characterizing solid-solid phase transformations under pressure. The atomistic mechanisms of nucleation and growth in a structural transformation of pressurized CdSe nanocrystals are identified using transition path sampling computer simulation. A committor-based transition s...

Shape and faceting of Si nanocrystals embedded in a-SiO2: A Monte Carlo study

We study the equilibrium shape and faceting of Si nanocrystals embedded in a-SiO2, using continuous-space Monte Carlo simulations supplemented by the Wulff construction method. Our aim is to explain in atomistic terms why large nanocrystals are often observed to be faceted, while smaller ones are always found to be spherical. By developing and analyzing realistic structural models, we show that...

Nucleation and growth in structural transformations of nanocrystals.

Using transition path sampling computer simulations, we reveal the nucleation mechanism of a pressure-induced structural transformation in CdSe nanocrystals. Consistent with experiments, the thermodynamic transition pressure of the transformation increases with decreasing crystal size. Through transition state analysis, we identify the critical nuclei and characterize them by calculating activa...
